Join Luz Mack for a SIX WEEK Children’s Book Writing/Publishing Workshop and receive the in-depth knowledge and understanding to embark on your creative journey as a children's book writer. By the end of the workshop each participant will walk away with the draft of a board book.
This workshop is interactive with tons of hands-on fun activities where participants will walk away with the resources they require in order to publish successfully.
WHY THIS WORKSHOP?
Are you a serious beginner, ready to learn more about the children's book publishing? With this course, you will understand what traditional publishers expect as standard, from storyboarding to editing and fine-tuning your piece! Other topics include requirements for self-publishing, working collaboratively with illustrators, editors, and beta readers and making your book stand out in the space. Also, create a digital footprint so your mission stands out when people see your books in the market and the type of author you aspire to be.
Participants will receive the know-hows of:
Week #1-Board Books: Board books are commonly used for kids as young as an infant to 4 years old. After the age of 4 or 5, children seek greater depth in storytelling and characters, more in line with the stories found in picture books. Sound, touch, and visual stimuli are essential elements of board books for kids. The variety of shapes and sizes in the board book spectrum is endless. Small enough to fit in the palm of your hand or large enough to overflow a school backpack. Learners will learn the different types of board books and how they are used to teach basic learning concepts that stimulate curiosity. This workshop is full of fun exercises that motivate all learners to create their board books and walk away with resources.
Week #2-Pictures Books: Picture books tell visually along with text stories that capture everyday life and adventures and guide children to become more knowledgeable about the world around them. This class will teach learners all they need to know about picture books, from storyboarding to envisioning illustrations, working with illustrators, and editing their manuscripts. You learn through the exercise from start to finish and apply hands-on the information learned and resources that you can take with you.
Week #3-Early Readers I: Early reader books are considered the "earliest" chapter book a child can experience. While they are mostly read from the ages 5-9, anyone can enjoy early reader books! These books introduce new words and use repetitive phrases, sentence structures, and rhyming words to reinforce what your child is already learning in academic settings. In this session, we compare different books, page layouts, the importance of beta readers, and tips for working and collaborating with illustrators on your project.
Week#4-Early Readers II *special emphasis on working with Illustrators: In this class, we continue learning more about early reader books, from researching and searching to hire an illustrator for our project to the importance of protecting intellectual property by using NDA's and contracts. I will provide tips on how illustrations need a captivating feel starting from the cover to grab readers' attention and helps them grow curious about the book. I will also share learning moments on my projects.
Week #5-Editing and Revising: Revising and editing should feel like a collaborative group project. Although we touch on previous classes' editing, this class is solely dedicated to editing and revising because we know how hard it is to share your baby with others, but this is important to get direct feedback and suggestions on how to improve your manuscript. This class helps you differentiate the importance of an editor, beta readers, family and friends, and writer to non-writer feedback. Editing and revising must be incorporated into the page layout's design/ format and illustrations.
Week#6-Including Perks and Digital Footprint: This class would focus on wrapping it up and thinking outside of the box once you have your story, illustration ideas, and how you want your book to look and feel. It will have you thinking about what else can my book offer? Can it include a game, who you are as an author, and your digital footprint, from preliminary to end pages? I will share some ideas on how I grew as an author by seeing firsthand the things that drew my kids in, even when I did storytimes, listening to my little readers and families. I love focusing on making it fun, and you might come up with your ideas of how you want to leave your mark on the world with your book.
Let's take your idea and make it a fun and engaging story for our kids.
