Mangú Aquí is a romantic comedy/drama about the life of Roberto, a Dominican man who is 30 years old and has lived in NYC since he was a child. He is a mama’s boy, and awkward at dating. He has a great life and a hopeful future. He started his own business buying and flipping homes, and is taking a big risk to keep the last house he is fixing.
Despite a disastrous first date, he meets and falls in love with a woman named Katrina. She’s athletic, independent and empowered. A deep romance develops and all is perfect, until he introduces her to his mother, a traditional Dominican woman. All his mom sees is that his girlfriend does not cook.
Roberto has a difficult decision to make, to either please his mom or continue with his relationship with Katrina. He ultimately decides to follow his heart and takes a chance on love. He hopes his mother will eventually jump on board. Just when things seem to be looking up, ICE knocks on his door and takes him away.
This short film is the pilot of a bigger story, a series. Although Roberto is doing well in the present time, when he was eighteen, he went to jail for selling drugs. Suddenly, the past catches up to him and he is required to pay for past wrongdoings. He is deported back to his native country, a place he doesn’t recognize. After the pilot, this series will take place in DR and in the US.
