FOCUS: Writing From Research, Memory, and Loss

Elizabeth Acevedo is a Dominican-American poet, novelist, and educator from New York City. She is the author of multiple bestselling and award-winning books, including The Poet X, which won the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature, as well as With the Fire on High, Clap When You Land, and Family Lore. A former National Slam Poetry Champion, Acevedo first gained national recognition for her powerful spoken-word performances before transitioning into publishing. Her work is known for its lyrical intensity and emotional clarity, often centering Dominican identity, intergenerational trauma, migration, and young womanhood. Acevedo’s writing bridges poetry and prose, grounding contemporary narratives in cultural memory and historical context. She is widely regarded as one of the most influential Dominican voices in contemporary American literature.

The Dominican Writers Association retreats bring writers, educators, and graduate students together for immersive experiences rooted in culture, research, and storytelling. Through daily writing workshops, cultural immersion, and community building, participants gain the tools to strengthen their work and deepen their connection to Dominican identity.
