Join Dr. Angel Rosario and Mariela Regalado in "Narratives in Medicine: The Role of Storytelling in Healing. "Healing is complex, and despite advances in science, it is clear that medicine and surgery alone are not sufficient for healing. Narrative medicine is a creative tool that leverages stories to bridge the gap between patients and healthcare providers. This unique workshop will provide a reflective and supportive environment where participants will explore the unique challenges associated with receiving medical and surgical care in the community, by sharing personal and observed experiences related to cultural barriers, disparities, and the social determinants that can influence health and illness. Through guided writing exercises and group discussions, writers will craft narratives that spotlight the obstacles and resilience encountered in the pursuit of equitable surgical care. The insights derived from these narratives will not only enrich the participants' literary work but also contribute to broader initiatives aimed at enhancing surgical equity and accessibility for Dominicans.
The objective of the workshop are to:
- Learn about the practice of narrative medicine
- Foster Community Connection: Create a safe space for sharing experiences in healthcare that promote community
- Identify Healthcare Needs: Help identify and articulate the specific health concerns and disparities faced by the Dominican community.
- Leverage Narratives for Advocacy: Help identify major themes which arise through shared stories to further explore gaps in healthcare for the Dominican community
Who Should Attend:
- Dominican Writers and Storytellers: Writers interested in the intersection of healthcare, storytelling, and advocacy, seeking to use narrative as a tool for social change.
- Patients and Community Members: Dominican individuals who have experienced surgery or have helped a family member through surgery, who wish to share their stories or understand the experiences of others.
