The Un-American Dream: A Personal Narrative and Memoir Writing Workshop: The American Dream is supposed to be about democracy, rights, liberty, opportunity, and equality. But for many immigrants and first-generation Americans, that dream isn’t so straightforward. It’s shaped by sacrifice, displacement, and the constant negotiation of identity and belonging. In this 90-minute workshop, we’ll explore how to craft personal narratives that reflect the complexities of our experiences—what our families gave up to bring us here, what we’ve had to navigate, and how we redefine success on our own terms. Through writing prompts, discussion, and examples from celebrated writers, we’ll break down what makes a powerful personal story and how to structure it in a way that resonates. You’ll leave with a deeper understanding of storytelling, tools to shape your work, and the confidence to put your experiences on the page.
